One of the most important aspects of my job is to help clients look their best.
The most frequently asked question is definitely "what should I wear"? Knowing what to wear for a corporate styled head shot session is such an important part of preparation to look your best.
Here are some guidelines to help you look your best for your next corporate head shot session:
CLOTHING COLOUR AND PATTERNS:
- Select solid colours over busy patterns. A headshot should bring the viewer's eyes to your face and expression and not be distracted with a busy pattern.
- Long sleeves are preferred over short sleeves. The same principle applies for spagetti straps or off the shoulder shirts or dresses. As much as these can be extremely beautiful the purpose of a headshot session (unless you are a creative or in the entertainment/movie industry) is to create an image where the viewer's eyes are drawn to your face and expression. If there are distracting elements in the clothing or drawing the eye away from your face the image has less impact.
- Avoid colours that are similar to your skin tone and wear colours that provide a contrast to your skin tone. If you are of lighter skin, it is better to wear a darker colour pallette and avoid white. White will often wash out a lighter skinned individual. If you have medium to dark skin tone it is better to to avoid darker tones similar to your skin tone.
- Avoid overbearing colours. Bright colours like red, yellow and orange are best avoided all together unless they are specifically part of your brand or if they are a secondary colour like in a tie.
HAIR AND MAKE UP:
- If you regularly wear make up I suggest you simply "turn it up a notch". Especially your eyes. Also be sure to even out skin tone with a good quality foundation. If you would like to arrange a make up artist to provide make up for the session I can provide that prearranged service for you.
- Please don't get your hair cut the day of or the day before a photo-shoot. Please give yourself a week after a new haircut before your photo session so you have time to style it before the session in a manner that you are pleased with.
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS:
- The night before your session please lay your clothes on your bed and examine each piece and ensure it works well together.
- Make sure each item clean and well ironed before the shoot.
- Double check each piece and make sure they fit well and are not too tight. Poorly fitted jackets and shirts don't look professional.
- Wear dark socks. Even though it is a headshot session we may have an image where your socks are exposed.
A FEW LAST WORDS....these are only guidelines for your consideration. Over the years I have taken hundreds of head-shots and I have learned a lot about what looks best. Having said all of this it is completely up to the individual to decide what you feel most comfortable in. Being comfortable in front of the camera is paramount too.
